Winter 2016 Infinity Cup

The 2016 Winter Infinity Cup was the second iteration of the Infinity Cup. Thirty (32) boards were scheduled to compete in a 4x8 Group Stage where the top 2 teams from each group would then face off in a single-elimination playoff bracket to see who was to be crowned as the second champion of the Infinity Cup. The Infinty Cup is currently streamed on the Official /icup/ Hitbox . This will be the second time around for streamer Cotton and the first time for newcomer Erik.

3 points for win, 1 point for tie, zero for loss.

Top 2 teams in points advance to Knockouts. In case of tie, GD will determine tiebreaker or else away goals or else the tied teams will play a tie breaker game. No OT or Penalties.

Draw Edit

Draw was determined by Random.org, the video of the draw stream can be found here:INSERT LINK HERE. The top 16 from /icup/ I were ordered in the first 16 spots, with /cuteboys/ taking /intl/s place, and the newcomers were randomly placed on the list. The first 8 teams have their orders randomized 10 times, and then the next pairs of 8 while each team in the group of 8 is placed in a corresponding letter group going down the list.

Schedule Edit

Group Stages Edit

Group Stage Matches will be played for the first two long weekends (Friday to Sunday) of the event. Group matches will have each group play their first two matches, and then rotate to the next two until all 48 matches are played.

The first Friday, Sunday and the 2nd Saturday will have Groups A-D play.

The first Saturday and 2nd Friday and Sunday will have Groups E-H play.

Matches will be 30 minutes long in real time (including set up and intermissions) and be set for 10 minutes in-game. Gamedays will start at 1700UTC for each day except Day 1. 2 and 4 which will start at 2000UTC.

Match Summary

The second match of Infinity Cup II's Round of 16 pitted Group E's relatively average (but nonetheless first place) /furry/ against Group D's second-place but defensively dominant /leftypol/. Although /furry/ had won its last game by a comfortable 4 - 1 over /r9k/, while /leftypol/ had fallen 2 - 1 to /fit/, it was obvious that /leftypol/ had the advantage going in. /furry/, which had been hit and miss during the group stage, had a goal differential of exactly 0, while /leftypol/, which had dominated on both sides of the ball, had a GD of +6.

On this occasion, however, /furry/ would draw the first blood. In the early minutes of the match, /furry/'s offense surged past /leftypol/'s defense, leading to a quick shot by Wolf O'Donnel in the tenth minute that had to be saved by /leftypol/ keeper General Strike. Just six minutes later, Nate managed to knock /leftypol/'s Porky off the ball just outside the box, and volleyed an uncontested shot into the back of the net to give /furry/ an early 1-0 lead.

/furry/, unsurprisingly, continued on the throttle after scoring their first goal. Although /leftypol/ counterattacked right off the kickoff, their efforts culminated in a weak shot by Karl Marx that rolled briskly into the hands of /furry/ keeper Duke. /furry/ then proceeded to drive all the way back down the field, and Wolf O'Donnel capped /furry/'s onslaught off by slotting a second goal past General Strike to make the lead 2-0.

All was not lost for /leftypol/ though, as a quick counterattack off the kickoff moved the ball quickly upfield to Karl Marx, who calmly slotted one past Duke to bring /leftypol/ back within one. Less than two minutes had transpired since /furry/'s goal.

After the quick /leftypol/ goal, the intensity of the match died down somewhat, with the only chance by either team being a shot by Wolf O'Donnel in the 31st minute that rocketed just wide. However, it was then that /leftypol/ struck again, managing to get the ball to Alunya, who slotted one in and brought the game to 2-all.

With the two teams knotted at 2-2, /furry/ began to ferociously attack /leftypol/ in hopes of pulling ahead going into the half. Wolf almost got his second goal in the 41st minute, off of a Nate pass, but General Strike robbed him. A second, even better chance, came in the 44th minute, when Wolf crossed the ball into the /leftypol/ box toward Nate and Marty. Right as he was getting into position, however, Nate slipped and missed the ball, and Marty was unable to slot it in from his angle, leaving both teams tied at the half.

In spite of the setbacks, /furry/ opened the second half just as strongly as they did the first half. A cross into the box in the 51st minute was only just cleared by the /leftypol/ defense, but just as soon as it was cleared it was back into /leftypol/ territory. A shot on the net in the 52nd minute was narrowly cleared off the line, but fell to /furry/ again. In the 55th minute, a Nate header finally smashed the ball into the net, and brought /furry/ back ahead of /leftypol/.

Although down for the second time, /leftypol/'s offense remained relatively cool under pressure and went on the attack. Several opportunities presented themselves as the half went on. Karl Marx stripped a /furry/ defender on the /furry/ side of the field in the 63rd minute, but failed to capitalize on the chance. Five minutes later, /leftypol/ striker Zizek had a shot strike the post and get cleared. Then Alunya, /leftypol/'s other striker, had a chance in the 70th but went offside.

Finally, /leftypol/'s persistence paid off when, in the 75th, Karl Marx scored his second goal of the game to tie both teams at 3. Suddenly, the prospect of extra time, which had become a factor in /just/'s match with /hebe/, was looming. Both teams now went on the offensive, with /furry/ getting a chance in the 79th minute as Wolf O'Donnel found himself in a 1v1 with the keeper. His shot, however, ended up wide, and went out for a goal kick.

Although both teams continued to attack, the match was deadlocked going into stoppage time. In the 91st minute, a bad challenge by /furry/ gave /leftypol/ a free kick, which was, to the chagrin of leftists, wasted. But, just extra time seemed inevitable, with less than a minute of stoppage time left, /leftypol/ managed one final attack against /furry/. With the game possibly on the line, the ball managed to find its way to Alunya, who drilled it past Duke in the game's dying seconds, giving /leftypol/ a hard fought 4-3 victory, and knocking /furry/ out of the cup.
